AbstractDepression was a recurrent phenomenon in the life of the American painter Edward Hopper (1882-1967). He is known as one of the artists who portrays modern melancholy most convincingly. The article uses his original artwork to reflect upon sleep, awakeness and melancholy. Hopper brings nightmares into the day and the light, and insomnia into the revealing morning sun.
